Asphalt Paving is properly known as Stone Mastic Asphalt and is often shortened to SMA.
Stone Mastic Asphalt was developed in Germany to produce a much more durable and hard wearing version of tarmacadam which can cope with high volumes of traffic and heavy goods vehicles. It has a much greater stone content than tarmacadam together with an asphalt binder which makes it ideal for car parks, access roads, industrial areas and other surfaces where high volumes of commercial traffic will use it.
Stone Mastic Asphalt is always machine laid and machine rolled to ensure that the paved surface is properly compacted. It also requires a more substantial sub-base than tarmacadam and is normally installed in several layers comprising a sub-base, intermediate course, binder course and the final wearing course.
